A rainfall warning has been issued for parts of Central Alberta with heavy rain expected Monday night and throughout Tuesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 70mm are likely. Higher amounts of 80 mm or more locally are possible.

The rain is forecast to begin Monday afternoon in Red Deer and could be heavy at times on Monday night with 15 to 25 mm expected.

On Tuesday 20 to 30 mm of rain is expected, which could be heavy at times. Rain will taper off on Wednesday.

Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. People should watch out for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Residents should continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
