Come to the rescue: Almost 50 dogs recovering in Red Deer after Milk River seizure

Three shelters in Red Deer are nursing almost 50 dogs back to health following the largest seizure of neglected dogs in Alberta’s history. Alberta Animal Services, Red Deer SPCA and Klassic Kennels are caring for the canines after taking them in nearly two weeks ago. Erica Coomber, Alberta Animal Services shelter administrator, said the dogs were severely underweight, malnourished and parasite-ridden when they arrived on Jan. 14. READ

Rockets edge Rebels in shootout

The Red Deer Rebels earned a point against the Western Hockey League’s top team Tuesday night at the Enmax Centrium, but GM/head coach Brent Sutter felt his team could have had two with a 60- to 65-minute effort. “We found a way to get a point, but I don’t think we’re overly pleased with the way we played, though,” said Sutter, following a 4-3 shootout loss to the Kelowna Rockets in front of a recorded gathering of 5,180.
