MLA begins new year with trip to India

Promoting trade between Alberta and Southeast Asia are among the first tasks on Cal Dallas’s 2014 to-do list.

The MLA for Red Deer South and the province’s International and Intergovernmental Relations minister will depart for India on Jan. 9. There, he’ll accompany Premier Alison Redford in New Delhi, Noida and Mumbai.

Dallas’s itinerary includes attendance at the opening of Alberta’s new India Office and at the Petrotech 2014 Exhibition and Conference, as well as a presentation at the Canada India Energy Forum, and meetings with India’s minister of petroleum and natural gas, officials from the country’s oil and gas and financial sectors, and the Canadian High Commissioner for India.

On Jan. 16, Dallas will continue on to Singapore, where he’ll attend a business dinner with the Canadian High Commissioner for Singapore, a briefing session with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, and an Alberta Food Industry event. He’ll also speak at a Canadian Chamber of Commerce Singapore networking breakfast, and meet with representatives from a number of industry and business organizations.

“Southeast Asia and Oceania have a combined population of 600 million people and include several of the world’s most successful economies,” said Dallas in a government release. “Singapore remains a significant entry point into these diverse and prosperous markets. This is why it’s so important we get boots on the ground to identify opportunities and showcase what Alberta has to offer.”

Dallas is scheduled to return to Alberta on Jan. 21. Redford will also spend time at Bangalore while in India, and then travel to Switzerland for the World Economic Forum.

Meanwhile, Alberta Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour Minister Thomas Lukaszuk will be in China Jan. 3 to 10. He’s expected to meet with government and industry officials, as well as the Canadian Consul General.
