Fans and corporate sponsors helped Red Deer Rebels raise $26,250 for Kidsport, a charity that allows underprivileged children to participate in sports. The Jersey off Your Back event staged a silent auction for jerseys worn by Red Deer Rebels during the Feb. 3 game. After the game, Red Deer Rebel players took off their jerseys, autographed them and presented them to the winning bidders. Corporate sponsors Finning (Canada) and the Red Deer Rebels will present the cheque to Kidsport during their home game in Red Deer on Friday.
Two Red Deer College student groups will host a Valentine’s fundraiser on Tuesday. The Student Science and Engineering Society and the Hospitality and Tourism Society are sponsoring The Valentine’s Harp Bar at the College’s Cornerstone Dining Room. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show is set to begin at 7:30. Funds raised from this event will go to support future student-run events at the college. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 for a couple and include the show and one drink. More drinks are available at the cash bar and guests can order from a pay-as-you-go menu. A brief on page C1 in Wednesday’s Advocate had an incorrect date for the Occupy Red Deer event this weekend. The mental health information event is Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Dose Coffee and Love at 4924 Ross St. (upstairs at Sunworks). At 3:15 p.m., there will be a general assembly to plan further events.
People can learn strategies to deal with family members who have mental illness on Feb. 16 at Sunnybrook United Church. Vicky Fox Smith, an educator with the Canadian Mental Health Association, will provide information, skills and strategies during the presentation.
