First Friday offers variety

An intriguing mix of visual, literary and musical arts will be offered at Red Deer’s First Friday gallery openings for August.

Edmonton abstract artist Paul Holowack will showcase his mixed-media works in the Channels exhibit at the Harris-Warke Gallery. The show upstairs in Sunworks on Ross Street, runs from Aug. 1 to 29. The First Friday reception will be held on Aug. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Twelve Red Deer-area members of Writers’ Ink, are holding a collaborative display of visual and literary artworks at The Hub on Ross. Their Albertan Landscapes exhibit runs Aug. 1 to 31.

There will be no reception this First Friday, although the gallery will be open from 9 to 4 p.m. and free music from Carlos Copaban and friends will be offered in the afternoon. Albertan Landscapes will have its opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18.

The GlassEarth exhibit of organic mixed-media and glass sculptures by Vancouver artist Larissa Blokhuis continues at the Kiwanis Gallery, downstairs in the Red Deer Public Library. The exhibit goes to Aug. 24. A First Friday reception will be held Aug. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring a live performance of original music, and blues and Bruce Cockburn covers by singer-songwriter Vincent Millward.

Two- and three-dimensional works from Alysse Bowd, Robin Lambert, Shirley Rimer, and Erin Boake will be exhibited at the Viewpoint Gallery in the City of Red Deer’s Culture Services Centre at 3827 39th St. The exhibit runs to Sept. 30. The gallery will be open until 6:30 p.m. on this First Friday.

The Marjorie Wood Gallery in the Kerry Wood Nature Centre will have no First Friday opening on Aug. 1, but look for the Bird Frieze exhibit by Brian McArthur and Dawn Detarando to open Aug. 4. It will feature ceramic pieces.

Also, art by Russell Smethurst will be showing from Aug. 1 to 30 at the Velvet Olive, and works by Sasha Grinnell will be exhibited at Cafe Pichilingue for the month of August.
