MacLeod says she’s no dancer and she’s OK with that

Carla MacLeod is a two-time Olympian, having skated her way atop the podium on different occasions. Although certain she won’t find the top of the podium in the ballroom, this opportunity is a way to give back not only to Red Deer, which will host the 2019 Canada Winter Games, but also the next generation of Canadian athletes.

Celebrity: Carla MacLeod

Partner: David Joseph

1. How would you describe yourself as a dancer before this experience?

Terrible! I suspect several of the celebrities in this dance off claim to be rough around the edges, but the difference between them and me is I can’t even locate an edge to determine if it’s rough! I have zero dance experience, not even at the bar or just for fun, I don’t do it. So you can imagine my natural talent and the challenge my pro, David, is facing!

2. What was the most challenging part you overcame/hope to overcome?

Well, the fact that I am so far out of my comfort zone is the double-edged sword for me. Being out of my comfort zone is actually why I agreed to participate, but with that said, it’s also where all the challenges come from. My hope is that come our performance time I am confident enough to enjoy the experience knowing full well I won’t be perfect in technique but should score high for effort.

3. What is the best quality about your dance partner?

His sainthood! David has a level of patience second to none. He is an incredible coach because he can regress any skill to ensure I understand what I’m doing, at least in theory if I can’t physically grasp it. And he’s fun. He is shaping the dance to suit me, and I appreciate the energy he brings to our sessions! Oh, and he is allowing my sarcastic comments to be a part of our sessions as I think he’s realized those are the only things I have control over while we’re dancing.

4. What is the one fear you have when you dance in front of the crowd?

I’m not worried about the crowd or the night. I’ll be nervous because I will want to do a good job, but I also know I’ll have put in the time and David will help me through anything. And someone needs to finish last and I’m OK with it being me, so I don’t worry about the results!

5. Do you watch Dancing with the Stars?

Yes, I have watched several seasons of Dancing With The Stars, and I’m going to channel my inner Julianne Hough during the performance.

Other dancers include: Duane Daines, Troy Gillard, Mellisa Hollingsworth, Cari MacLean, Cindy Mandrusiak, Todd Simenson, and John Young.
