RDC faculty performs diverse music for the community

From Schubert to an original work by Red Deer’s Ruston Vuori, RDC brings diverse music to stage.

From Schubert, to spirituals, to an original work by Red Deer’s Ruston Vuori – Red Deer College will bring 200 years of music to the stage next week.

A dozen talented RDC instructors will entertain at a faculty recital on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Arts Centre.

Percussion instructor Malcolm Bell said it’s a great way for the college to connect with the community. “Once a year, in the fall, we put something like this on for the student to enjoy, and also to play some music for Central Alberta.”

Bell will perform on drums as part of the Faculty Jazz Quintet, along with Andrew Ludtke on trombone, Jeremy Doody on guitar, Audrey Graham on piano, and Steven Tanner on bass. The group will tackle everything from Feels So Good, which was popularized by Chuck Mangione, to standards such as Limehouse Blues and What Is This Thing called Love?

The playbill includes works going back to the early 1800s. Danica Hoffart will perform a piece by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, accompanied by Louise McMurray on French horn and Dale Wheeler on piano.

Wheeler will also perform Lament or the Maiden and the Nightingale by Spanish composer Enrique Granados, who was inspired by the paintings of Goya to create his most famous opera, Goyescas, from 1916. It includes the Lament.

RDC piano instructor Vuori will premiere and perform his original composition for trombone and piano, called Sonata in C Minor.

Trombonist Peter Fielding will also perform, as will classical guitarist Shannon Frizzell, and Sharon Braun will sing some American spirituals.

Bell said all of the instructors have other outlets for performing throughout the year. But they enjoy getting together to collectively play for the community and their students during the faculty recital.

The program has something for most tastes, he added — from classical music, “right up to a brand-new composition.”

Tickets are available from the Black Knight Ticket Centre.
