Thanks for linking to the broader world
The Red Deer Advocate on June 18, 2013, had a story headlined: Two poetry contests looking for submissions.
I thought you would like to know how much I appreciated that item since a story I submitted was published in the Poetry Institute of Canada prose book called Sketches of Memory: Anthology of Creative Writing.
Had it not been for the Advocate carrying that news item, I would never have known of the contest.
I don’t know who was responsible for getting that piece into the paper, but I think unique and rare items like these have an important place in a local paper like the Advocate. It’s a way of avoiding being insular and very far removed from bigger themes of whole countries and global events.
It opens chances to participate in thinking and writing about overarching ideas alongside local and personal ones.
Winners of Award in Excellence in Poetry were Lily Breland and Shirley Reaman of Red Deer.
