A Red Deer man faces several charges after an alleged armed robbery in the Bower Place parking lot during the afternoon on April 25.

RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said the 65-year-old victim indicated that she was going to her vehicle parked outside the shopping mall when a man came up to her demanding $100.

"He then retrieved a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at her," said Savinkoff about the suspect who ran off with her purse.

Police were first called at 3:45 p.m. and within nine minutes, the suspect was captured near the corner of Gaetz Avenue and Bennett Street near the mall.

"We engaged in a foot chase, ultimately arresting him and locating the victim's cards."

He said the firearm that was seen, which could have been an imitation, was not been located, nor was the victim's purse.

A 36-year-old man, of no fixed address, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, two counts of resisting arrest/obstruct police, possession of a forged document, robbery, failure to comply with release conditions, and failing to appear for fingerprints.

He was remanded into custody to appear in Red Deer Court of Justice on April 29.
