17-year-old male charged after Hunting Hills threat incident

RCMP have laid charges against a Red Deer teen believed to be at the centre of a credible threat to harm students at Hunting Hills High School.

The 17-year-old male, who cannot be named because of provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with uttering threats and mischief under $5,000.

Members of the Red Deer RCMP were called to the high school in east Red Deer last Wednesday after a note was found on a desk of the school. Student witnesses said the note indicated a threat to shoot students in the school that afternoon.

Numerous police officers and two police dog services teams swarmed the school, patrolling the hallways during the final hours of the school day to ready for any potential threat. The school was not forcibly evacuated as police took a passive approach, waiting for students to leave and not allowing re-entry. Extra-curricular activities were cancelled and once all the students had left, police conducted a thorough search of the school.

No weapons were found, the threat never materialized and no one was hurt.

The accused teen will make a first appearance in Red Deer provincial court on Thursday.
