Border services lays charges against U.S. men in gun seizures
COUTTS — Firearms have been seized and charges laid against two U.S. men in separate incidents at the border crossing in Coutts, Alta.
The Canada Border Services Agency says officers arrested Donald Hardinger of Vernal, Utah, a week ago after finding seven firearms in his travel trailer.
They included two non-restricted shotguns, three non-restricted rifles, a restricted semi-automatic rifle and a fully loaded restricted handgun.
Christopher Grosstephan of Colonial Beach, Va., was arrested two days later when officers discovered two restricted handguns and one fully loaded prohibited semi-automatic pistol in his van.
Each man faces eights charges — four under the Customs Act and four under the Criminal Code.
Hardinger and Grosstephan were released on bail.
Hardinger, 49, is to appear in Lethbridge provincial court Sept. 9, while Grosstephan, 33, is scheduled for Sept. 11.
