18 more Red Deer policing positions added, taxes to jump
Red Deer residents are now facing a 4.29 per cent property tax increase following city council’s decision to add 18 positions to the police force.
After nearly three hours of debate so far on Thursday, council decided to add eight constables, six municipal employees and four supervisors over a two-year period.
The financial impact to the 2013 budget is an additional $888,375 and another $1.25 million to the 2014 budget, subject to the services level review.
Council voted 8-1 in support.
Coun. Paul Harris was opposed because he did not want to add any more funding to policing before the service level review was completed.
The budget was projected to involve a 3.91 property tax increase prior to Thursday, the fourth day of council budget discussions.
The budget debates continues.
