City working to fully restore power

It was lights out for a fairly large portion of Red Deer on Thursday morning.

About 3,000 residents lost power around 10:30 a.m. for nearly an hour due to four hydro pole fires, one near 43rd Street and Taylor Drive and three near Jewell Street and Taylor Drive in the north end of the city.

Numerous traffic lights were also out for a period of time.

Crews were working quickly and had restored power to some areas, including Red Deer College and the Kentwood and Normandeau neighbourhoods before noon.

Those in the Glendale and Johnstone Crossing areas and spots along Taylor Drive south of 43rd Street were still without power at that time.

The City of red Deer said in a press release they will update the public with any delayed restoration problems.

Senior communications consultant for the city, Tara Shand, said the fires are believed to be a result of all the wet snow but the investigations are still underway.
