Comparing Red Deer to locations around world
A Red Deer couple had the chance to take a look at what they could afford if they were to sell their Canadian home and live abroad.
Jim and Jaleen Shier will be featured on an upcoming episode of the HGTV series Live Here, Buy This, a show that asks Canadians to pick a house in fantasy locations that is similarly priced to their own home. The show demonstrates what someone could afford if they chose to live in another country.
The Shiers watched the first season and when a Facebook casting call went out, Jaleen sent in an email submission.
“Before we knew it, we got a phone call saying we’d been cast and we were going to be on the show,” said Jaleen.
For the Shiers, who have been married for two and a half years, there was a selection of condos or townhouses to choose from in Holland, Greece or Italy. The couple didn’t go to each location themselves, but crews were sent to film and capture the properties the couple chose from.
“It gives us the insight, if we decide to maybe someday travel and possibly make that a home now, or a retirement home,” said Jaleen.
“It’s something we can dream about,” said Jim.
The show looks at, based on a fair price for their Red Deer condo, what they would be able to afford in Italy, Holland or Greece.
“What we could get in these places was exponentially better,” said Jaleen.
Jim said while the European homes offered better amenities, the kitchens weren’t the same.
“It’s a different kind of a lifestyle,” said Jim. “But it’s more of a freer and open lifestyle.”
Shooting took an entire day but by the end of the day the couple made their decision.
Not willing to give the outcome away and instead encouraging people to watch the show, Jaleen said the homes they had to choose from were all amazing.
“Everything they picked for us was beyond what we could have imagined that we could have been able to afford based on our budget selling our home,” said Jaleen. “It was a really hard decision to just pick one. You end up with six properties that you have to choose from and to pick just one was really hard.”
The show airs on Sept. 11 on HGTV Canada at 7:30 p.m.
