Fatal crash suspect faces 14 new charges
A local building contractor awaiting trial in connection with a fatal collision in Red Deer more than three years ago appeared in Red Deer provincial court on 14 new charges on Monday.
On Dec. 21, Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver.
Police say when they located the parked and running vehicle, the driver was slumped over the steering wheel. When the driver was awakened and police searched him they allegedly found cash, crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana.
Rodney Ross Arens, 36, of Red Deer is charged with impaired care and control of a motor vehicle and drug-related charges.
Arens remains in custody and returns to court on Jan. 7.
Arens is scheduled to go to trial in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on April 22 on charges laid after a fatal collision in Red Deer on July 1, 2010.
Anouluck “Jeffrey” Chanminaraj died and his older brother and sister, Jamie and Stephanie, were injured in a collision at the intersection of Kerry Wood Drive and Taylor Drive.
Arens is charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing injury, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing injury.
