Four injured in Lacombe collision Saturday

Four people were taken to hospital after a Saturday collision in Lacombe that hurled one vehicle onto nearby railroad tracks.

Lacombe Police Service said the collision happened shortly after 1 a.m. when a northbound pickup truck with seven occupants slammed into a westbound pickup at Hwy 2A at 47th Avenue.

Police allege the northbound pickup was speeding and ran a red light before it hit the other vehicle, which rolled and came to rest on CP Rail tracks east of Hwy 2A. The driver and sole occupant of that pickup escaped with minor injuries.

The driver and a number of passengers in the other vehicle weren’t so lucky. The 19-year-old driver was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and then transported by STARS to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. Another passenger also suffered serious injuries and was taken by STARS from the collision scene to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. Two other passengers went to area hospitals.

Three remaining passengers were treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

The rail line was shut down for several hours while the wreckage was cleared away.

Charges have not yet been laid and the investigation continues.
