Funeral held for murdered youth
A funeral service was held Thursday morning for a Hobbema youth who was murdered last weekend.
Hobbema RCMP identified the 16-year-old as Levonne Baptiste.
Spokesman Const. Perry Cardinal estimated that more than 100 people attended the services of the youth who was shot on the Samson Cree Nation on Saturday.
RCMP upgraded the death of the boy to murder after an autopsy was conducted.
The Red Deer RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Hobbema RCMP Community Response Unit and Wetaskiwin/Hobbema RCMP General Investigation Section continue to investigate the shooting.
Late Saturday, police said they believed the killing may not have been a random act and that they were checking into whether gangs may have been involved.
Cardinal said they are continuing to investigate and that they have “a lot of suspects.”
Police say they continue to followup on all and any information in regards to this investigation and are encouraged by the cooperation of community members.
Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP at 780-585-3767 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-TIPS (8477).
