Gas line rupture causes evacuations; power restored

Residents can return to their homes, power has been restored and traffic is moving again following a gas line being hit on 55th Street in downtown Red Deer earlier today.

The line was struck near 55th Street and 49th Avenue at about 8:15 a.m. Red Deer Emergency Services responded and evacuated some residents and businesses in the area around the intersection as a precaution.

About 18 people were evacuated.

Red Deer Electric Light and Power shut off power to some residents and businesses along 55th Street from 47th to 40th Avenues.

Transit routes 4, 8, 11 and 51 were delayed due to the leak as buses couldn’t move through the area.

Construction in the area is ongoing as part of the 55th Street water and sanitary services improvement project.
