Olds business badly damaged by fire

A fire ravaged an Olds contracting company building on Thursday morning, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

The blaze broke out around 10:17 a.m. at the Olds Contracting Ltd. shop, on a range road just west of the town.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find the large industrial building engulfed in thick, black smoke with significant flames lapping up the walls.

They had the fire under control by the late morning but didn’t fully extinguish it until sometime between 12:30 and 1 p.m.

Crews used a “defensive strategy” with a steady stream of water to combat it and protect adjacent equipment.

According to Debra Martens, fire services administrative support with the Town of Olds, no one was injured but two workers were working outside the building on the premises at the time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The building suffered heavy damages, estimated to be beyond $200,000, according to the Olds fire department.

Olds Contracting Ltd. is a local excavating and building construction company.

More to come.
