One dead in early morning crash

One man is dead and another was taken to University of Alberta hospital after two dirt bikes collided early Saturday morning.

At about 6 a.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to the crash, which happened on a gavel lane way behind Lodge Place in Sylvan Lake. On scene officers found two heavily damaged dirt bikes and two seriously injured males.

Sylvan Fire and Associated EMS also responded to the scene and began treating the victims. Two STARS Air Ambulances were dispatched to the scene, landing in the football field behind the Fox Run School.

One man was transported by helicopter to the University of Alberta hospital in Edmonton with critical injuries. The other man was pronounced dead on scene.

According to a release from the RCMP, they suspect alcohol and drugs played a factor and the investigation is ongoing. A collision re-constructionist from Red Deer attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Police also said neither man was wearing any type of protective gear, neither bike was registered and neither bike was street legal.

Killed in the crash is a 26-year-old Sylvan Lake male, while the injured male is a 27-year-old also from Sylvan Lake. Police said they knew each other.

The incident is being investigated as an impaired driving causing death file and criminal charges are pending.

Names were not released.
