Restrictions in place after Calgary building comes up a few bricks short

CALGARY — A commercial building in downtown Calgary has been secured after bricks started falling off a wall of the structure into a parking lot.

The bricks tumbled from the facade of the Genco building late Tuesday morning, but there were no reports of injuries.

The building was evacuated and workers stabilized the structure overnight by erecting heavy barricade walls to contain any debris that might come loose.

Traffic restrictions were put in place for the Wednesday morning commute while tenants were not being allowed back in until engineers had assessed the building.

Fire battalion chief John Cherweniuk says the building as a whole looks structurally sound and there has been no further movement since the problem first arose. (CHQR)
