Samson Cree Nation member charged with second-degree murder in fatal stabbing
One member of the Samson Cree Nation has died and another is behind bars after a stabbing in Wetaskiwin.
Local RCMP and emergency medical technicians were called to a fast-food restaurant in Wetaskiwin at about 6 p.m. on Tuesday to look after a man suffering stab wounds.
Const. Karolina Malik of the Wetaskiwin RCMP said in a statement issued on Thursday that staff and customers rushed to the aid of patron Jonathan Greene, 33. However, his injuries were severe and Greene succumbed later that night at the hospital in Wetaskiwin, said Malik.
Acting on information provided by witnesses at the scene, police found a suspect in a nearby alley.
Samson Cree Nation member Casey Lee Lightning, 48, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Lightning made his first appearance in Wetaskiwin provincial court on Thursday and has reserved his plea until May 29.
RCMP continue to investigate the incident and are asking any witnesses who have not already given a statement to contact the detachment. They also hope to hear from anyone else who may have information that would assist in their investigation.
