Speed played role in fatal Ponoka rollover

Ponoka RCMP say speed played a role in the Sunday morning rollover that killed 35-year-old Ponoka woman Crystal Tomlinson.

Const. Sara McLaughlin said Tomlinson’s SUV was travelling west on Hwy 53, three kilometres east of Ponoka, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

McLaughlin said it appears Tomlinson drove over the north shoulder, over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle, sliding into the ditch and rolling multiple times. Tomlinson was thrown from the vehicle and was found dead some time later when an off-duty paramedic came upon the scene and called it in at 6:15 a.m.

The road was dry and bare at the time of the rollover.

Though investigators are unable to tell the exact speed Tomlinson was driving, they believe it played a factor in the incident. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 100 km/h.
