Three Hills has area's first New Year's baby

Several babies made their début in Central Alberta on New Year’s Day.

The New Year’s baby at Three Hills Health Centre arrived at 1:18 a.m. and staff at Sundre Health Care Centre met their first baby of the year at 6:31 a.m.

Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre welcomed its New Year’s baby at 7:50 a.m.

Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre said hello to its newest resident at 9:34 a.m. and the first baby of 2013 at Stettler Hospital and Care Centre arrived at 10:13 a.m.

Nathan and Kristy Horstemeier, of Three Hills, have a baby boy, Samson Isaac, weighing 2.920 kilograms (six pounds and seven ounces).

It’s the couple’s first child and they didn’t anticipate he would to be born on the first day of the year.

“The due date was Jan. 12. But Kristy had high blood pressure so they thought it would be better to have it sooner,” said the Nathan, 31, by phone on Tuesday morning while holding a sleeping Samson who cooed softly.

Both Kristy, 23, and Samson were doing well, he said.

“Mom is just sleeping right now and baby is laying on me sleeping too.”

Nathan said labour was induced Monday morning and they returned home until contractions intensified in the early evening.

And after 1 a.m., he was cutting the umbilical cord.

“It went really well. We’re so thankful,” said Nathan, a maintenance worker at Prairie Bible College.

Jen and Dillon Kroetch, of Rimbey, had their overdue son Zackary in their arms on New Year’s Day, weighing 3.612 kilograms (seven pounds and 15 ounces).

“He was due Dec. 27 so we were hoping maybe Christmas. We’re not surprised he’s a New Year’s baby,” said Jen, 20, by phone Tuesday afternoon.

“He played hide and seek for a little while, but we found him.”

All day Monday they knew he’d be coming soon and were off to the hospital early Tuesday morning.

“I’m tired and I’m excited and it’s going to be fun,” Jen said.

Zackary is their second child. Jen is a full-time mother and Dillon, 23, is a heavy-equipment operator.

In Red Deer, Falhado Hashi, 27, and Justin Flett, 28, weren’t expecting their baby until Jan. 9.

“Falhado was in the hospital with the flu. They were going to release her this morning, and I came here this morning, and we had a baby,” said Flett, who builds cellphone towers for Turris Midwest Contractors Inc.

“Everyone is good. Everyone is healthy.”

Georgia Jean Flett weighed 3.684 kilograms (eight pounds). She is their second child.

Amber Buniak, 31, and Ryan McLean, 33, of Coronation had their third child, Brody Donald McLean, at the Stettler hospital.

He was due Dec. 20. and Buniak was induced Monday morning.

“The other ones went really smooth. Everything went good and fast. This one kind of got us worried at the end that’s why went for the C-section,” said McLean who raises race horses.

But everyone is healthy, he said.

Brody weighed 3.827 kilograms (eight pounds and seven ounces).

Chantal Theriault and Terran Meston had a baby girl at the Sundre hospital.
