Two people killed in crash east of Red Deer
Two people are dead and another is fighting for her life following a two-vehicle collision on Hwy 595, 16 km east of Red Deer.
Blackfalds RCMP said that around 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, a sedan travelling westbound on Hwy 595 veered into the eastbound lane, narrowly missing one vehicle, and then collided head on with another car.
Both vehicles came to rest on the highway.
Members of the public came upon the collision and attempted first aid.
The 49-year-old female driver of the second vehicle and the 29-year-old driver of the first vehicle died on scene.
A 22-year-old female passenger in the first vehicle was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and later flown to the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton with life-threatening injuries.
RCMP Blackfalds continue to investigate. Speed did not appear to be a contributing factor.
Hwy 595 was shut down for four hours while emergency service workers completed their work.
Names of the drivers and passenger are not being released at this time.
