Weekend road closures scheduled for Woody's triathlon.

A weekend full of racing and personal triumph is set as the Woody’s RV World triathlon will take place.

On both Saturday and Sunday, events will be held around the triathlon with the Kids of Steel event on Saturday and the Spring and Relay taking place on Sunday.

On Saturday, kids from five to 15 are competing in a soldout event. Those aged five to seven will swim 50 metres, bike 1.5 km and run 500 metres. Those aged eight and nine will swim 100 metres, bike five km and run one km. Kids aged 10 and 11 will swim 150 metres, bike five km and run two km. Youth aged 12 and 13 will swim 300 metres, bike 10 km and run three km. And youth aged 14 and 15 will swim 500 metres, bike 10 km and run four km.

Race check-in starts at 6:45 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m.

On Sunday, the adults take over with a race that includes 750-metre swim, a 19.4-km bike ride and a five-km run. Check-in starts at 5:45 a.m. with the race getting underway at 7 a.m.

As a result of the triathlon, there will be several road closures in Red Deer. On Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 11 a.m., Michener Centre Road from Ross Street to 55th Street, 55th Street from Morningside Drive to Cardinal Avenue and Morningside Drive from 40th Avenue to 55th Street will be closed.

There will be further closures and reduced speeds in some areas on Sunday from 7 to 11 a.m. to accommodate the race. Cardinal Avenue from 55th Street to Cornett Drive will be closed as well as the northbound turning lane at Safety City onto 30th Avenue. Two 30 km/h zones will be in place: one on 30th Avenue from Rollis Street to Hwy 11 and the other on 67th Street approaching 30th Avenue.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on 67th Avenue approaching 30th Avenue and on 30th Avenue from 67th Street to Hwy 11.

Motorists are advised to use caution and watch for runners, cyclists, RCMP officers, volunteers and flagmen.

The race starts at the Michener Aquatic Centre, at 51A Street and 38th Avenue.
