Bystanders help Innisfail Mountie make arrest

A 35-year-old Ottawa man is facing a number of charges including resisting arrest

Bystanders jumped in and came to the aid of an Innisfail Mountie trying to make an arrest recently.

Innisfail RCMP said last Friday about 7:30 a.m. an officer spotted a vehicle with a stolen licence plate parked at the pumps at a local gas station.

“When police attempted to arrest the lone male driver he refused to comply and attempted to drive away,” said police on Monday.

“Police were forced to break the driver side window and an altercation ensued which resulted in some customers at the store responding to assist the lone police officer.”

The officer and his helpers managed to get the suspect out of the vehicle and he was arrested without further incident. No one was injured in the incident.

Police later confirmed that the vehicle was stolen.

A 35-year Ottawa man has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, obstructing police, resisting arrest and failing to stop for police. He was also faces charges of driving with a licence and without insurance.

The accused is due to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Wednesday.
