Doctors going public about Red Deer hospital

State of the Hospital Address on Tuesday

A group of concerned local doctors will lead a State of the Hospital Address for the public on Tuesday at Baymont Inn & Suites at 4 p.m.

Doctors say Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, consistently one of the five busiest hospitals in Alberta, does not have all the services Central Albertans require and plans to expand the hospital have fallen off the AHS priority list.

A Red Deer needs assessment shows the hospital is short 96 beds, three operating rooms, and 18 emergency room treatment stretchers. Without expansion the need for operating rooms, beds and emergency treatment space will quickly multiple.

A cardiac catheterization laboratory is among the services doctors are calling for. They say without local access to treat blocked arteries, and the long transfer times for the treatment elsewhere, means Central Albertans have a 60 per cent higher rate of death or disability than people in Calgary or Edmonton.

Doctors encourage patients, hospital staff and public to attend Tuesday’s meeting.

Baymont Inn & Suites, the former Red Deer Lodge, is located at 4311 49th Ave.
