The number of building permits issued in Red Deer in January jumped compared to the same month last year, but the overall estimated value dropped.
The city said commercial construction in Timberlands, including construction of a new fitness facility, is the main driver behind the increase in permits.
Last month 77 permits with a total estimated value of $11.5 million, compared to 47 permits last year totalling $14.3 million.
A total of 63 residential and 14 commercial permits were issued last month. In January 2016, there were 31 residential and five commercial, as well as eight industrial and three public permits.
Last month no industrial or public permits were issued.
Residential permits totalled $3.7 million and commercial permits came to $7.7 million last month.
