A Sylvan Lake-area golf course has applied to rezone neighbouring land for a possible expansion.

Lakewood Golf Resort, a nine-hole course located about one km east of Sylvan Lake, wants to rezone 77 acres from agriculture to commercial use.

A planning report to Red Deer County council says the change has been requested to “facilitate the expansion of the golf course from nine holes to 18 holes.”

“In addition to the proposed golf course expansion, the applicant has expressed wishes to provide camping similar to the existing accommodations within the Lakewood Golf Resort,” say planners.

Development permits would be required for both the golf course expansion and campground.

Scott Bergdahl, head pro at Lakewood, said on Wednesday they are not releasing more information about their plans while the application moves through the approval process.

A public hearing for the rezoning is set for July 18 at Red Deer County Centre.
