UPDATED: Look no further than Westerner Park for renovation ideas

Red Deer Home Renovation & Design Show runs Friday to Sunday

Red Deer Home Renovation & Design Show opened its doors on Friday at Westerner Park for those who want to fix, redecorate or upgrade their homes.

Presented by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Central Alberta (CHBA-CA), the show features over 90 exhibitors and runs Friday until 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

CHBA-CA board member Kevin Wilkie said the popularity of television renovation shows and similar social media sites has more people interested in working on their homes and the design show can help them.

“It’s just a great way to learn about the industry and what’s hot and all the new and great things,” Wilkie said on Friday.

This year CHBA-CA partnered with the Designers’ Alliance-Central Alberta to offer free home design sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Ask the Expert booth is back with specialists in colour, landscaping, design and renovations on Saturday and Sunday.

Peppa Pig, of the British animated preschool television series, will be at the show to meet his young fans on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Habitat for Humanity’s has a booth at the show to let people know about its ReStore in Red Deer.

Shannon Humphrey, volunteer and communications co-ordinator for Habitat, said a lot of people don’t even know there is a ReStore here.

“We’re kind of tucked back into an industrial area in the north end. That’s why we do these events, to just get out into the community and let people know that we’re here,” Humphrey said.

She said ReStore sells both used and new building materials and products.

“Right now we have an order of tiles coming in from a project down in Strathmore. And we’ve got some stuff coming in from a build in Stettler.

“It’s just stuff that’s been left over from their builds. They don’t want to take it back, or can’t take it back, so they donate it to the ReStore and we’re able to issue them a tax receipt for the brand new material that otherwise wouldn’t be used.”

Admission to Red Deer Home Renovation & Design Show is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and children under 12 are free with an adult.
