Two inmates have been charged with first-degree murder following an assault that killed another Drumheller Institution inmate.

Jason Tremblay, 42, had been serving a sentence for drug possession and trafficking.

At 7:34 p.m. Sunday, Drumheller RCMP responded to a complaint of a stabbing at the institution.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.

The Calgary RCMP forensic identification section and other officers visited the prison the day after to investigate and gather evidence. An autopsy was completed Tuesday confirming that the death was caused by stab wounds.

Giovanni James Alexis, 24, and Richard George Paul, 23, have both been charged with first degree murder. A court date has not yet been confirmed.

A lockdown has been in place since the incident in the medium-security unit to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution.
