New traffic lights installed at scene of bike-car accident in Red Deer

Motorists crossing between Morrisroe and Eastwood will have to obey lights starting Wednesday

A new set of traffic lights will be fully operational next week to improve safety at the intersection of 39th Street and Ellenwood Drive/Metcalf Ave.

Starting on Wednesday, Dec. 14, motorists travelling in a north-south direction, crossing between the Morrisroe and Eastview neighbourhoods, will have to obey traffic lights instead of stop signs. (Currently, only motorists travelling east-west, along 39th Street, have to obey traffic signals).

On the same day, pedestrian countdown signals will also be activated in both directions.

The new traffic lights were installed to make this intersection safer. It was the scene of an accident on the first day of school, when a young cyclist was struck and injured by a motor vehicle.
