Alberta Tories to introduce budget overhaul as Bill 1 in spring sitting
EDMONTON — The Alberta government plans to enshrine in legislation a new way of building budgets.
Treasury Board president Doug Horner has announced that Bill 1 of the spring sitting will be the Results-Based Budgeting Act.
The act will direct that each line-item in a budget be re-evaluated on its fundamental merit rather than simply assuming money must be spent and then deciding whether it should be more or less.
The process will follow a review of departmental spending.
Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith has said that while zero-based budgeting is a good concept, provincial Tories, with their recent record of four consecutive deficit budgets, are not the team to implement it.
The spring sitting begins Tuesday, with the budget being delivered two days later on Feb. 9.
