Electrical problem suspected in Alberta hog barn fire that kills 900 sows
DERWENT — An estimated 900 hogs have been killed in a barn fire in eastern Alberta.
The overnight blaze happened at a hog operation near Derwent, about 230 kilometres east of Edmonton.
Crews from four rural volunteer fire departments spent several hours battling the flames that could be seen for several kilometres.
Hog operation owner Don Gulayec says the fire cut power to his property which caused some delays alerting fire crews.
There is no word on the cause of the fire, but Gulayec says there is some indication it may have been the result of an electrical problem.
The producer also says the blaze has taken away his livelihood and he’s still trying to figure out what to do.
