Family of musician stabbed at Calgary house party devastated
CALGARY — The family of a promising musician stabbed to death along with four other young people at a Calgary house party last week is “devastated” he won’t be coming home.
Zackariah Rathwell, 23, was a first-year student at the Alberta College of Art and Design. He was in a band called Zackariah and the Prophets along with Josh Hunter, 22, a commerce student at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business.
Rathwell’s family issued a statement late Sunday afternoon.
“We are devastated by what happened. It is a struggle every day to understand that Zackariah won’t be coming home. He was so close to so many, and touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with,” said the family in a statement.
“To the other families, please accept our deepest condolences for your loss, no one should ever have to lose someone who was so young and full of so much potential.”
Rathwell’s funeral is planned for Tuesday.
“We would also like to thank everyone who has offered their prayers and condolences. We know that as we grieve, the City of Calgary grieves with us. Thank you for all your thoughts and all your prayers. Thank you for caring about Zack,” said the family.
“He was an amazing kid who grew into an amazing man. We didn’t have him for very long, but we are so very grateful for the time that we did have him. We are all going to miss him so much.”
Rathwell, Hunter, Jordan Segura, Lawrence Hong and Kaiti Perras were at a house party marking the end of classes at the nearby University of Calgary early last Tuesday morning.
They were attacked and stabbed to death by another party goer.
Segura, Hunter and Perras will be remembered in separate services Monday.
A small memorial for Hong was held Sunday at Bishop O’Byrne High School, where he attended classes. It was closed to the media.
Matthew de Grood, 22, has been charged with five counts of first degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday to face the allegations.
