Former Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel backs Jim Prentice; may run for seat

EDMONTON — Former Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel says he is backing Jim Prentice in the contest to become Alberta’s next Tory leader and premier.

Mandel also says he won’t rule out his own run for a seat in the legislature in the next election should Prentice win the leadership vote in September.

Mandel, who appeared at a news conference with Prentice in Edmonton, said he likes that Prentice is progressive and is willing to work with big cities.

Prentice has promised a new working arrangement with cities to allow them to solve the challenges of a large metropolis.

He has also suggested he might consider giving cities more autonomy.

Mandel said he will organize events in the coming months to drum up support for Prentice.
