NDP says Katz six-figure donation to Tories offside, demands investigation
EDMONTON — Alberta NDP leader Brian Mason says billionaire Daryl Katz has bought a government with a massive donation to the governing Tories.
Mason is calling on Elections Alberta to investigate the donation and he wants Premier Alison Redford’s Progressive Conservatives to pay it back.
Documents released by Elections Alberta reveal Katz, his family, and business colleagues contributed $300,000 to the party during the spring election.
There are reports the donation was as high as $430,000 and was delivered in one cheque to the Tories.
The most any one person or group may contribute is $30,000.
Mason says it’s a critical issue, given that Katz and the City of Edmonton had been seeking $100 million and a casino licence for a new arena for Katz’s Edmonton Oilers.
