Ploughing championship to mark Olds College’s 100th anniversary
The dirt was flying at Olds College Tuesday morning.
A crowd of 150 ploughing enthusiasts didn’t seem to mind though as they received a sneak preview of the dirt to come at the 2013 World Plowing Championship in Olds next year.
Whaley Mar of Brooks showed his skills behind the tractor in conventional and reversible ploughing.
Lynn McDonald, chairman of the Canadian Plowing Association, led a ploughing question and answer session on the field.
“It was a day to get the community involved both from an educational standpoint plus we are looking for volunteers,” said Kerry Moynihan, general manager of the college’s centennial. “We need about 300 volunteers.”
Moynihan explained the ploughing championship on July 19-20, 2013 will be one of the college’s signature events for its 100th anniversary celebrations. Sixty competitors from 30 different countries will put their ploughing skills to the test. He estimated 5,000 visitors will come to the college each day of the competition.
