Semi-truck splits, spilling oil

The belly of a semi-truck hauling crude oil split open, spilling a large amount of oil near Veteran.

Consort RCMP, EMS and the Veteran fire department were called to a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Hwy 884 south of Veteran shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday.

When crews arrived on scene they saw a semi-truck that was hauling crude oil and had rolled, during the crash the tank broke open spilling about 18,000 litres of oil.

Clean up crews spent most of the night containing and cleaning the spill. Crews are using backhoes, loading vehicles and hydrovac trucks to recover the oil.

Alberta Environment said the spill doesn’t pose any health concerns.

The driver of the truck sustained minor bruising from the seatbelt. He was treated and released by EMS at the scene.

Consort RCMP said the investigation in the rollover and oil spill is ongoing.
