Stelmach gets standing ovation from municipal leaders at conference
CALGARY — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach received a standing ovation from hundreds of municipal leaders after telling them their promised infrastructure money was still coming.
Stelmach also said he’s going to streamline provincial bureaucracy because it’s partially responsible for holding up economic recovery.
The premier was applauded many times Thursday as he spoke at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association annual meeting.
His warm reception came a day before he heads into a leadership review in Red Deer this weekend.
Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier said he’s skeptical about Stelmach’s assurances.
He questioned whether infrastructure funding will continue to flow.
“Without having the numbers in front of us, it’s always sort of this look-and-see type of approach. It may be the full amount and it may be a different amount next year,” Bronconnier said.
