A Red Deer kids cooking show Just One Bite has put out a casting call for six children for its second season.
The Shaw TV show aired four episodes last fall with host Meg Tucker who leads her “mini foodies” in preparing dishes. As the title of the show suggests, children must also try just one bite of various ingredients used in the dishes.
“It’s really easy to say you don’t like something, but you can’t say you don’t like it if you’ve never tried it. That’s where the idea for Just One Bite is from,” said Tucker, 44, of Red Deer, who also produces the show.
Tucker said she was pleased that the show has already been an inspiration to some families.
“Since the show aired I’ve had parents and kids alike telling me that they now follow the just one bite rule in their house.”
Tucker, a mom who loves to cook, said many people have seen the original show that airs on Shaw TV in several Alberta communities and nationally on Shaw Direct, on YouTube and at www.justonebite.ca.
“I get stopped weekly by people who have watched it or who want to be on it. It’s made an impact and I’m really proud of it.”
She said a few thousand people have already viewed Tuesday’s casting call announcement on Facebook.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to have a kids cooking show and I know there is nothing like it right now on television — at all,” said Tucker who is a radio host on Mike & Meg in the morning on 100.7 CRUZ FM.
She said this season there will be six children cast for the show instead of 10, and there will be more time spent cooking.
“Each episode will have a theme and we’re going to be making not just one, but two or three dishes per episode so the kids will definitely have a bigger role in the cooking process.”
Tucker is looking for outgoing kids to join the show that will air in spring/summer 2017.
“They definitely need to be curious about being in the kitchen, but this is not a competition and they do not need to be experts.”
She said it’s all about inspiring kids to want to be in the kitchen helping mom or dad.
