Trustees with Red Deer Public Schools took their place at the school board table on Wednesday for the first time since the Oct. 16 municipal election.

Two new trustees Laurette Woodward and Nicole Buchanan joined incumbents Bev Manning, Bill Stuebing, Dianne Macaulay, Bill Christie and Cathy Peacocke.

Both Woodward and Buchanan said they will be busy getting up to speed on the workings of the school board.

“I’m just getting my feet wet. There’s still lots for me to learn,” Buchanan said.

Woodward said she wants to focus on strengthening relationships between home and school.

”I have a lot to learn before we can make suggestions, but I’m really eager to do that and to make sure those relationships are strong,” Woodward said.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, the new board chair and vice-chair were being chosen, along with school liasisons and committee assignments. A report on the annual education results was also on the agenda.

Manning said this week is a busy one in the district with the staff recognition night on Thursday.

“Quite often in education teachers are overlooked. Staff is overlooked. They work really, really hard on a day-to-day basis so we like to recognize that and celebrate that,” Manning said.

On Friday is the official grand opening of Don Campbell Elementary School in Inglewood. The school district partnered with the City of Red Deer to include a community gathering space at the school.

“It was a great opportunity to partner and provide some wonderful community space for people in Red Deer. We’re excited. There’s a lot happening,” Manning said.
