A Monday morning incident that started at the East Hill Shopping Centre with several vehicles and a police cruiser being damaged soon ended with the arrest of a suspect.

Marie Fabregas, supervisor at the East Hill Centre Fas Gas, said she was quietly working when she heard some loud noise outside at the back of the store.

She tried to see what was happening by looking at the security video but all she saw was some customers quickly getting out of their vehicles, and then a police officer chasing someone on foot toward 22nd Street.

She didn’t go outside of the store because she was frightened. And another customer came in and said someone had smashed into some vehicles. She ended up locking the door to the gas station for short awhile.

Red Deer RCMP said they had responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot at the shopping centre at 8 a.m. On arrival, the driver of a Ford Ranger collided with the police cruiser and several other vehicles and then fled on foot. No one was injured in the collisions.

RCMP and Police Dog Services began searching the Inglewood neighbourhood and closed down Inglewood Drive to traffic. Citizens were asked to avoid the area while they conducted the search. The suspect was described as a Caucasian male wearing a black hoodie and grey pants.

RCMP located the suspect at 8:45 a.m. as he attempted to evade police on Illingsworth Close, and took him into custody without incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Red Deer RCMP complaint line at 403-343-5575.
