Red Deer Riggers win to open Sunburst League season

The Red Deer Riggers’ newest addition made his presence felt to start to Sunburst Senior AAA Baseball League season Monday.

Jay Kirkham fired three strong innings out of the bullpen to earn the win for the Riggers on the way to a 6-3 win over the Sherwood Park A’s in Sherwood Park. Kirkham struck out five and allowed four hits and one earned run.

Anthony Chatwood led the way offensively for the Riggers, with a three-run home run in his only at-bat of the game. Corbyn Shields and Grayson Botchers each had a hit and an RBI, while Justin Reay chipped in the other RBI.

Riggers’ pitchers Rese DeRuyter and Adam Turgeon combined for five strikeouts over four innings of work.

The Riggers return to Sherwood Park next Monday, before playing their home opener at the Gulls Stadium in Sylvan Lake on May 17.
