Starting on Aug.1, the City of Red Deer is simplifying the playground and school zone speed limits.

A city release said changing the effective times for reduced speeds should make it easier to remember them.

School zones will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days and playground zones will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. Zones that are marked as both school and playground zones will be converted to playground zones, and the 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. speed restriction will apply.

During those hours, the speed limit is 30 km/h through the zones.

“The new times are really simple and cover peak play hours for schools and playgounrd,” said Wayne Gustafson, Engineering Services Manager. “This will make it easier for drivers and safer for pedestrians.”
