Residents asked to stay off soggy sports fields

The first tentative signs of spring may have people reaching for their soccer balls and baseball bats.

Wait just a little longer though, asks the city.

Sports fields are on the soggy side and residents are asked to stay off for now so as not to damage the grass.

“At this time, the grass is not actively growing and running on the turf, and use of cleats, can damage the root system increasing the time needed until the turf is ready for play,” says the city.

City ball diamonds are also closed due to the wet conditions. The surfaces need to be levelled and groomed before play. Using the diamonds early can create ruts in the ground making it difficult to level.

Weather permitting, city sports fields are set to open May 1. Booking can be scheduled through the Facility Pass and Bookings staff at 403-309-8411.
