A new regional transit service has been rolled out.

2A South Regional Transit connects Innisfail and Penhold to Red Deer Transit at the Bower Place mall bus stop. The service expands upon routes that already connect Red Deer to Springbrook and Gasoline Alley in Red Deer County.

The project is a collaborative effort between Red Deer, Innisfail, Penhold and the province. The Alberta government provided $700,000 in funding from the Rural Transportation Pilot Project program to help launch the service.

Those interested in checking out the new service are encouraged to take advantage of free rides during the first month of operations. After January, fares will cost $5 per trip.

“The 2A South Regional Transit project will offer tremendous mobility for those who do not drive — or choose not to drive — to connect with the people and places that matter to them,” says Jo-Ann Symington, Red Deer County’s community services manager.

“This pilot project will serve as a real-time test of the demand for ongoing transit from these communities.”
