Straddling the netherworld between fun and fear, the Paranormal Cirque will be setting up its red and black tent in Red Deer next month.

“Acrobats of the air,” illusionists, contortionists, mysterious creatures (read: zombies, serial killers, monsters) are set to transport audiences into a darkly fantastic world that falls somewhere between theatre, circus and cabaret.

The Paranormal Cirque blends horror with comedy and sensuality to entertain from May 16-19 at the Parkland Mall. Fear and surprise are the main ingredients for these shows “that bring your back to when we dream — and when we had mightmares and fantasies,” states the cirque’s website.

Paranormal Cirque is a touring, European-style circus for grown-ups operated under a big-top tent by Cirque Italia.

The acrobatic circus contains adult language and themes and is recommended for ages 17 and up, requiring photo ID for entry. No one under age 13 will be admitted (and kids 13 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult over age 21). The show also uses strobe lights, which can trigger some medical conditions.
