WOOLEY Alfred (Al) Ray 1915 - 2006 Alfred (Al) Ray Wooley beloved husband of the late Barbara C. Wooley, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, AB on Sunday,October 8, 2006 at the age of 91 years. Al was born into a hard life and a large family on a homestead near Battle Ridge, AB on August 9, 1915. As soon as he was old enough to carry a pail he was helping the other children with farm work and running a trap line with his older brother. His father died of cancer when he was eleven, and he had to leave school to help support his family, working the farm, trapping and working in the saw mill. When social workers learned that the children were living without a parent they removed the younger children, including Al and forced them into separate orphan homes. As soon as he could get away from the home Al returned to Northern Alberta where his mother had returned to try and reclaim the homestead. Al spent most of his life working temporary jobs, farming, sawmills, road construction, trucking and trapping until he met his future wife in Calgary, whom he later married. During the war he served a term with the Canadian Army until 1946. His life took him to many places on the prairies and he spent two years living and working in New Zealand. Al was an outdoorsman and was happiest fishing in the mountain streams and hunting the high country than being indoors, he was a true Mountain Man. He was nearly fifty years old before he was able to get his first real full time job. He spent the remainder of his working years ploughing in underground telephone cable for AGT (now Telus) before he retired. Al's life could make a history book in itself including an older brother that was murdered on a farm house outside of Red Deer after being sold into servitude in exchange for a horse. He gave his life to many, whoever needed help, but naturally few if any returns. This day the world lost a "Real Man", may he now receive his just rewards. Al is survived by a daughter Shirley D Olund of Prince George, BC; a son Alfred Rick Wooley of Wrentham, AB; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and in-laws. He was predeceased by his entire family except for his half sister Pearl Ouelette of Calgary, AB, and by his wife Barbara, who passed away earlier this year. Funeral Services will be held at the Salvation Army Glenmore Temple (921-68 Avenue S.W. Calgary , AB) on Monday, October 16, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. with the Colonel William Ratcliffe, Presider.
